Zambia Trip (2006)

In the spring of 2006, we went halfway around the world to visit friends in Zambia and see the cool sights in their back yard. On the way home we spent a few days in London to decompress.

Note: I originally posted this gallery to our site shortly after we returned from the trip. During a site overhaul, however, I never got around to porting it to the new gallery system…until now. That’s why it’s showing up as something new even though it’s four years old.

Lusaka: May 30 – June 1; June 7 – June 10. Lusaka is the capitol city of Zambia and home to about two million people. It’s an odd mixture of old and new, with a very prominent Western influence due to its past as a British colony. Our friends Brian and Tracy live and work here, so it served as our base camp while we were in the country. I’ll warn you right now that this is the least visually interesting album in the set, as there really isn’t much to see in Lusaka (compared to the safari, that is).

Livingstone: June 1 – 3. From Lusaka we traveled to Livingstone, where we stayed two nights at the Royal Livingstone Hotel. Livingstone is home to Victoria Falls and a lot — a LOT — of monkeys.

Safari: June 3 – 7. We spent four nights / five days with Robin Pope Safaris in South Luangwa National Park. As expected, this was the highlight of the trip. We encountered most every animal that we could imagine, with the notable exception of the big cats. They were around, but they did a good job hiding from us.

Village: June 6. We took a day trip to the Kwaza village near our safari camp. This is a small village of about 45 people situated near the local school and clinic.

London: May 29; June 10-13. On the way to Zambia we had an eight-hour layover at Heathrow, so we took a bus over to Windsor to kill some time. On the return trip, we spent four days in and around London.
